walterwakefield sponsors the
ARA Best Cover Design Award

Creativity 25 Aug 2026

An annual report is far more than a regulatory obligation, it is a strategic asset that articulates corporate strategy, demonstrates long-term value creation, and reinforces stakeholder confidence.

As the corporate reporting landscape rapidly evolves (driven by the new mandatory Australian climate reporting standards (AASB S2) and shifting stakeholder expectations) organisations face the challenge of communicating complex data clearly and concisely.

As proud sponsors of the ARA Best Cover Design Award, walterwakefield shared insights at the 2026 ARA Seminar on how strategic design helps shape award-winning annual reports by transforming complex disclosures into structured, business narratives.

Here we share some of those insights, providing an instructional guide on how to design an award-winning annual report cover.

How to design an award-winning annual report cover

An annual report’s front cover serves as the first point-of-contact with readers. It should visually communicate an organisation’s core purpose and operations at a glance, whilst appearing attractive, engaging and relevant. Readers should be able to understand who you are and what you do, before opening to the first page. This also applies to annual reporting landing webpages. Here are three key principles for achieving an award-winning front cover design.

A theme should communicate the organisation’s overarching narrative for the year. Different audiences may seek different information from the annual report. First identify your key audiences – investors, shareholders, current and potential employees, community members, customers and suppliers – and their interests and concerns to determine their information needs. This will help to identify the key messages that should be projected through the report. Ensure to involve the CEO and Chair in defining the theme as this could present opportunities to include initial design ideas and confirm their support for the project.

The visual concept for the cover design should be driven by the theme, combining design, text, photography and graphics to visually illustrate the theme, and engagingly lead the way into the report.

The visual representation of the theme should be further referenced throughout the report and provide overarching guidance and cohesion to the presentation of information within the report.

There are multiple visual approaches available – such as photography, illustration, graphics and typography – to design your front cover. Decide on which approach will best communicate the theme and your organisations overarching narrative, purpose and operations.

If photographs are to be used, decide how they will be gathered – purposeful photography shoots, stock photography or AI-generated images. Photographs communicate the ‘human side’ of an organisation by relating people to achievements, activities, events and places.

If photography is not a suitable option, illustrations or graphics can provide opportunities to think outside the box, by creating future-focused worlds, or convey the theme and narrative more subjectively. If graphics or illustrations are to be used, decide on the style and what should be featured.

Once a theme and visual approach has been established, the final touches require bringing everything together – thematic text, key visuals, company logo, document title, and reporting year – and leveraging branding elements such as fonts, colours, and framing devices to make your report cover distinctive and unique to the organisation.

Consider the placement of each of these elements with the natural reading direction in mind (top to bottom, left to right) to aid the viewer through the hierarchy of information on the cover. Think about how white space is used and the scale of each element to create prominence and hierarchy.

Taking your front cover design further

The Annual Report is one document amongst a broader reporting suite. Consider how the design can be translated consistently and cohesively across other documents being released together in the reporting suite.

The Annual Report and reporting suite is distributed across multiple communications touchpoints – such as print, online, email, social media and shareholder registries – so consider how the visual design is translated across all these touchpoints consistently and cohesively. This helps to reflect confidence and create a recognisable reporting suite.

If an annual report microsite or landing page is created alongside your Annual Report document, attention should be drawn to this by placing a statement on the home page of the organisation’s website with a link to click-through directly to the annual report. Sending an email to stakeholders to advise the report is now available or announcing the availability of the report across the organisations social media accounts, with links directly to the report will also help to further distribute your annual report and create more value from your reporting processes.

Celebrating excellence in corporate reporting

walterwakefield views corporate reporting as a collaborative partnership, working closely with clients to transform regulatory disclosures into clear, engaging business outcomes.

We were proud to congratulate Tongan Health Society Inc at the ARA 2026 Awards Dinner on winning the Best Cover Design, with the award presented by Jaimy Walter, our Managing Director. A clear example of addressing the three key design principles, with judges commenting:

“The cover features a beautifully executed graphic that conveys a strong, embedded meaning clearly articulated on the inside front cover: ‘When all hands work together, the future is transformed.’ Use of a graphic approach, rather than photography, provides a distinctive, memorable quality. The complementary colour palette is both confident and refined. The results are thoughtful and distinctive front and back covers with broad stakeholder appeal, and a publication that feels considered from beginning to end."
